Musicians, Safety Patrols Receive Awards
Woman’s Club honors middle- and elementary-school students
The musicianship of four students from Cooper and Longfellow middle schools was recognized by the Woman’s Club of McLean at a ceremony on Tuesday, May 7, where the students also performed on their instruments. Student Ian Lee, of Cooper Middle School, played the Sonata for Clarinet in C Flat, Movement 1, by Camille Saint-Saens, accompanied by David Anderson. Student Audrey Goodner, also of Cooper, performed Partita No. 3 for Solo Violin in E Major by Johann Sebastian Bach. Student Catherine Kim, of Longfellow Middle School, played the Adagio from Sextet Opus 71, by Ludwing van Beethoven, accompanied by Esther Jeon. Student Serenna Semonsen, also of Longfellow, performed Violin Sonata No. 3 in D Minor, by Eugene Ysaye. The four students each received an award of $100 from the Woman’s Club.
Eight students at McLean elementary schools were recognized for their significant contributions as safety patrol members. The honorees were: Madeleine Spaner and Noah Workie, of Churchill Road Elementary School; Beverly Penu and Rowan Collier, of Franklin Sherman Elementary School; Ryan McKenzie and Sophia Park, of Kent Gardens Elementary School; and Joseph Devylder and Nola Gramatikov, of Spring Hill Elementary School. The students received trophies engraved with their names and those of their schools, and each school received an award of $80 for safety program equipment.
The students’ parents and the school principals, music directors and patrol sponsors attended the ceremony, as did the Fairfax County Crime Prevention Officer for the McLean District, Mario Colorado. The awards ceremony is an annual event of the Woman’s Club of McLean.

The wine and cheese party for advertisers, sponsors, homeowners and grantees, and the Holiday Homes Steering Committee was lots of fun, and gave the Woman's Club of McLean a great PR opportunity in the community. In attendance were Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce President Paul Kohlenberger, Bill Debose, Claude Moore Farm re-enactors, SHARE Board member and WCM member Carol Mourninghan, Second Story Development Chair,Lauren Witherspoon, Tour sponsors Kelly Haltek (Chesterbrook Residences) and Aziza Mojadidi, VP (Sandy Springs Bank). Homeowners and other WCM members that helped make this party possible. |

WCM's Music Awards and Safety Patrol Program is an annual salute to McLean middle schools and all five elementary schools. Cooper and Longfellow Middle School music award winners performed top caliber recitals to the delight of club members and guests. Select student patrol leaders at all five elementary schools received trophies for their exemplary performance during the school year. WCM also presented donations to middle school music departments and elementary school patrol programs. |
